| 内容記述 | Since the French language became one of the official languages in Canada in 1969, the social, political, and economic situation around francophones outside Quebec has changed. This paper examines some geographical studies on the language situation within and beyond the bilingual belt or the transition zone in Canada, and finally proposes a model of language retention of francophones outside Quebec. While rural communities suffer from depressed economy and depopulation, urban areas tend to thrive. Thus, the model proposed in this paper emphasizes access to an urban centre, and implies that new residential areas in English dominant cities may be a 'niche' for the French speaking minority living in such a region. | |||||||
