Lava flows that effused to the western and southwestern sides of the island in 2017 have characteristic structures such as lava inflation cleft and platy joints. In addition to these structures, lithofacies and microscopic features are also similar to the 2013–2015 lavas. Petrological observation and geochemical data suggest that the 2017 products are andesite as in the 2013–2015 eruption. Although the whole rock chemical composition of the 2017 products is slightly different from that of 2013–2015, the difference is too little to make a significant change on physical properties of magma. The eruptive activity of Nishinoshima has changed geomorphology and geology drastically, and the magma erupted is also not the same throughout the eruption time.
