The Poisson model is calibrated with a dummy variable distinguishing sectoral location of the destination with reference to the origin and the CBD of Tokyo, in addition to the two variables of city size (population or the total inflows) and distance. The data set is the 1980 inter-urban migration flows in the Tokyo metropolitan area: migration from 23 wards of Tokyo City to the total of 131 wards and its neighboring cities. Compared with the gravity model, the competing destinations model and the intervening opportunity model, the Poisson regression model incorporating the sector variable is best in terms of goodness-of-fit and the spatial distribution and variation of distance-decay parameters.
