The general goal of this project is to examine the patterns of individuals' networks focusing on those with family and friends. It is to investigate how they may relate to the characteristics of cities and communities of residence. A mail survey was conducted in seven cities of varying degrees of urbanity to allow for comparisons between cities. The questionnaire contained various items，including the frequency and nature of personal contacts with family and friends，a s well as questions on the respondent's values，community involvement，and measures of social status. It was mailed to a systematic random sample of 300 individuals selected in each city(a total of 2100). With a high return rate of 47.8%，the total sample consists of 1004 males and females between the ages of 20 and 75.
