It is very important for the elderly to adopt new life styles in today's aging society ; thus，we must precisely understand the nature of these new life styles，so the elder1yc an create new life styles by themselves. Our research shows that the elder1y of central Tokyo are to a large extent engaged in various leisure and social activities such as hobbies on a daily basis，visits to temples and shrines，shopping，and domestic travel. They also participate in a variety of other activities，although their rate of participation is not necessarily high. We also found the elderly taking part in voluntary associations. Some have strong ties within the local society while others are deeply involved in vocational society. Independent activities are also observed. It was also found that the elderly have a wide variety of social relations，such as their close friends and neighbors. They regard these relations as very important in their lives.
