Method 1 is based on actual damage conditions,and method 2 relies on results of technical earthquake calculation Method 1 enables us to predict distribution of intensity (K) over a large area. In the example of a Kanto earthquake,first distribution of intensity (K) for the entire Kanto region is established from the percentage of totally destroyed wooden houses. Then,the relationship between the intensity (K) and the distance between the earthquake generated fault and the fault plane for each landform is determined. For smaller areas,e.g. Yokohama Old Town,the percentage of totally destroyed wooden houses can be explained from the landform and the depth and atratigraphy of recent deposits. Damage estimation in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area is an example of Method 2. The procedure for determining seismo-technological ground types from geological ground is explafned and ground classification for seismic micro zoning is outlined.
