In this study，some issues，which have to be examined in the study of elderly people focusing on the development throughout life，also have been considered. 1. Characteristics shown by elder Japanese people (1) The elderly in urban areas have lived there for a shorter period of time and have less contact with their communities than the ones in rural areas. (2) The percentage of older people living at home with their families in urban areas (71%) is as almost that of rural areas (78%)，but there is traditionally a tendency for people in rural areas to take for granted that they will live at home with their parents，compared with people in urban areas. (3) There are no significant differences between the revised Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale for the urban elderly and the elderly who live in rural areas. 2. Some issues for future study (1) Though the degree of social contacts of the elderly with their communities have been examined in previous studies，psychological factors，such as the reasons for social contact，were not sufficiently. (2) Complicated interpersonal relationships within the family，such as conflicts between the elderly and their family members，need more study. (3) There are a few theories which can be applied to the human development throughout a person's whole life.
