Studies estimating the distribution of seismic intensity have been made by means of the analysis of the investigation of the overturned tombstones or the analysis of the distribution of damaged wooden houses. These estimated values,however,are generally indicated by several rough ranks of intensity,and are thus impractical for use in earthquake engineering dealing with seismic microzoning. In this study,the degree of accuracy of the intensity estimated by overturned tombstones is discussed by introducing a theoretical analysis. Studies of the relation between seismic intensity (or acceleration) and extent of damage to wooden housing are reappraised.
