未知数の総数が多いため高い推定精度は望めないと同時に、 最ゆう推定量がこのモデルのもとでの最小分散性を示さない。これに対し、 物体の3次元形状を簡単な代数曲面に制限することによって少ない未知数でモデル化する手法も提案されているが、 適用範囲が著しく限定される。本論文では、 相対的奥行を確率場として表現することによって、 適用範囲を極端に狭めることなく統計的推定問題としての未知母数を削減し、 観測されるオプティカルフローから最ゆう推定としてこれらの母数を決定することを考える。具体的な計算法として、
