However, the issue of what makes it a possibility has not been fully addressed. In this thesis, I first look at historical circumstances of Eastern Europe, where the establishment of civil societies was demanded as a means for democratization. I will then proceed to critically examine the discourse ethics by Jürgen Habermas who praised the idea of civil society. Furthermore, I will summarize and examine points made by Axel Honneth in his Post-traditional Gemeinschaft theory, in which he argues that it is indispensable for deliberative democracy to ensure each individual member of the society – by means of a fair reorganization of the social division of labour – an opportunity to legitimately receive social recognition according to their roles. Finally, I would like to point out the following problems: If the Post-traditional Gemeinschaft theory is suggesting that social recognition leads to the subjective happiness of each individual, it holds in itself a possibility to unexpectedly support the intensification of scientific labour management. This, as a consequence, could undermine the foundations of a democracy which attaches great importance to deliberation.
