Since the island's discovery, it remains nearly uninhabited to this day. The biodiversity of this remote island had been studied infrequently because of the difficulty of access. Based on the only comprehensive survey in 1982, Minami-Iwo-To has been presumed to be pristine for the ecosystem status, because of its isolated and uninhabited status. Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Tokyo Metropolitan University carried out a scientific expedition to reveal the current status of geology and biodiversity of this island during 17-27 June 2007.
