Nonetheless, retirement allowances have not been formally examined by researchers in the field of household economics. Based on a micro-level dataset from a household survey, the paper studies the reality and determinants of lump-sum retirement allowances in Japan. Our ordered probit analyses confirm the fact that the amount of the lump-sum retirement allowances is an increasing function of the firm size and the length of worker’s service.
